Building Science
Building Science is the application of scientific principles toward a structure to help achieve the following:
Durability: Buildings should last for many years. Properly designed and performing structures often last for 100 years or more.
Moisture Management: Moisture is the enemy of a building. Moisture can permeate building components and lead to rot, insect infestation, mold, mildew and premature failure.
Energy efficiency: Modern buildings are designed to maximize energy usage and reduce consumption. Older buildings can be retrofitted to achieve energy efficiency.
Indoor air quality: As buildings become more energy efficient, the potential for indoor air quality issues increases. Mold, mildew, carbon monoxide, radon and VOCs are all problems that must be prevented.
Thermal Comfort: Building occupants should feel "cozy.” High or low humidity, large temperature swings, cold floors or uneven temperature distribution all lead to uncomfortable conditions for a building’s occupants.
