Building Efficiency

Building Efficiency encompasses two main areas, insulation and air sealing. They are collectively referred to as weatherization. Increasing the energy efficiency of a home or building lowers energy bills, increases occupants’ comfort and is environmentally responsible.

Murtha Construction has been involved in building weatherization and insulation for over a quarter century. The building weatherization industry truly got started back in 1976; shortly thereafter, Murtha Construction began its participation.

Through this program, weatherization service providers such as the Community Development Corporation on Long Island have had Murtha Construction install, free of charge, energy efficiency measures in the homes of qualifying low-income homeowners. These are not expensive upgrades—the average expenditure limit is $6,500 per home—but they are effective, and energy savings pay for the upgrades within a few years. The Department of Energy documents the savings and compares them against costs, so that over the years the efficiency of these measures can be determined.

Weatherization has helped spawn an energy efficiency industry for residential housing. Today, this industry employs thousands of people who work in low-income weatherization alone, and many times that number work for companies such as Murtha Construction that help homeowners increase their energy efficiency through low-cost measures. Many of the techniques that are standard procedure in this industry today were first developed and tested by the Weatherization Program. And through weatherization, DOE continues to develop and test in the field new advances in building science.

Murtha Construction is among the most experienced Long Island companies when it comes to building weatherization. Our highly trained energy auditors are experts at evaluating problems and prescribing an efficient and cost-effective course of action to correct them. Blower doors, duct blasters, combustion gas analyzers, infrared cameras and sophisticated modeling software are among the tools our audit crews employ to give you the most comprehensive energy audit available today. Since we fully participate in all efficiency programs offered by various agencies and utilities, our auditors will identify any incentives you are entitled to, potentially saving you thousands of dollars.

Our production department is provided a computerized work scope that clearly identifies the measures that we identified in the audit, complete with notes provided by the auditors. This means that what was identified in the audit is corrected at installation. Our production crews have also undergone extensive training, which means that minor issues often hidden during an audit are identified and corrected during installation.

Murtha Construction is the premier Long Island weatherization and insulation contractor. Contact us or Request an Energy Audit to get started today!
